How do I create a link in Word that will take me directly to a specific line in a pdf?  Not just to a page but to a specific line.

Hello!

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out.

Creating a link in a Microsoft Word document that takes you directly to a specific line in a PDF is a bit tricky because PDFs don't inherently support linking to specific lines. However, you can achieve a similar effect by using bookmarks and named destinations in the PDF.

Create a Named Destination in the PDF:

  • Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Navigate to the specific line you want to link to.
  • Go to Menu > View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Destinations.
  • In the Destinations pane, click on the Create button to add a new named destination.
  • Name your destination (e.g., specific_line).

2. Get the URL for the Named Destination:

  • Save the PDF after creating the named destination.
  • Open the PDF in a web browser.
  • Navigate to the named destination by appending #nameddest=specific_line to the URL of the PDF. For example, if your PDF is located at C:\Documents\example.pdf, the URL would be file:///C:/Documents/example.pdf#nameddest=specific_line.

3. Create a Hyperlink in the Word Document:

  • Open your Word document.
  • Highlight the sentence you want to link.
  • Right-click and select Hyperlink.
  • In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, paste the URL you copied earlier (e.g., file:///C:/Documents/example.pdf#nameddest=specific_line).
  • Click OK to create the hyperlink.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Thank you!

I have 2 things:

1.  I've followed each step in detail but I must be missing something.  After adding the #name... the link in Word is still only taking me to the document, not the specific line/destination.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

2. If I can get this one link to work the way I want or as intended, that's great.  However, can I do this for many?  I have 2 very large documents.  Word doc would need several hundred lines linking to 110 different specific lines in 1 pdf.  Can I even do such a thing?  It seems like such an arguous process at that scale.

Your thoughts and guidance are hugely appreciated!!
