Question

incorrect print size in adobe

we are a business that prints a lot of 8.5x11 labels. we output 8.5x11 from illustrator as a pdf. we open in acrobat. though the doc size is correct (ctrl D) as 8.5x11 when we try to print it shows the document as oversize in the print preview. this causes us to select "fit" to print it but that messes up the alignment of the document when nested with other labels. why does adobe change the size of the printing on the output to the printer? it makes no sense.

Quick question: does your content extend to the edge of your 8.5 x 11 workspace?

If so, that's the issue: your printer cannot print out to 8.5 x 11 inches so Acrobat "fits" the page to match your printer's printing territory.

to solve this, make a template of the edges of the allowable printing space on your printer and make your content fit in that region and you'll not have any "fitting" issues

No. We leave 0.125" space to the edge of the document.

That's probably not enough.

this may sound strange, but go into MS Word and open a new page. Now, go into document settings and set the margins for 1/4" all the way around. Word will tell you the smallest margin you CAN use. I'd trust it.
