Insert page switches navigation panel to thumbnail

When I'm compiling .pdf documents I commonly create bookmarks for appendix dividers, etc., then I insert the appendix documents.  When inserting the other documents the navigation panel automatically changes to thumbnail view rather than remaining on bookmark view.  Is there a way to change this setting?
