Inserting pdf into Word - only get an image but no link

Hello

I am trying to insert a link to a pdf into a Word document (with an icon) but when I follow the usual process (Insert object > link to file > Insert as icon it inserts a picture not a link.

The same process works fine for inserting a Word or Excel etc - I have a MacBook Air

Any ideas please?
