Installing Adobe Acrobat

Have had Adobe for a long time on the computer. Today I could not open files with Adobe. I got an error message and then the file was closed. Tried repairing Adobe, but it didn't help. When I would download a new version of Adobe, even the standard costs money - why does it happen like this?

What does the error message say, exactly? And does this happen with all files, or just some? Are you opening them by double-clicking, or via the File - Open command in Acrobat?

Also, what's the exact version number of the application (You can find it out by going to Help - About Adobe Acrobat)? What's your OS version?
