Question

Is it possible to collaborate using highlight and annotation without using the reader/acrobat client programs?

As a former employee of Adobe I am keen to explore pdf collaboration when integrating with our proprietary workflow engine.

Is it possible for our web application users to highlight, annotate and collaborate without downloading and installing the Reader/Acrobat client programs? (as it will be

hard to ensure that our users' it environments are consistent)

We were wondering if the Adobe I/O apis could help us but it looks like there is limited support for editing:

If we were to go down this route how could we manipulate the pdf's metadata to add highlighting and annotations.  The other integration points look more undesirable as they involve manipulating and installing software on the client machine.

Warmest wishes,

Ashley

Hi Ashley!

I don't know from api's, but have you looked at online proofing solutions like goproof.net and pageproof.com, which allow for browser-based markup and commenting without needing Reader/Acro? Would something like those solutions help you, even just to see what they're doing? Look at this page, specifically, about using GoProof and PDF downloads etc outside of Dropbox

For developer-related info, you might try the Creative Developer's Slack group (adobedevs.slack.com), a helpful group of fellow developers and scripters, and Adobe developer support folks there too. The Slack group is an outgrowth of the annual one-day Creative Developer Summit. More info on that here (full disclosure, I'm a co-host of the overall conference):
