Is it possible to convert a PDF to PDF/X-3 in Acrobat and retain the RGB colors of the original file?

I want to submit a children’s book (bright colors) to Amazon KDP. All pages created in RGB.

I used Acrobat to create a combined PDF of all the interior pages. It looks to me like all the RGB colors were retained-- which is what I wanted.

I need to save the file in PDF/X format. I’d like to save it as a PDF/X-3 because I’ve read that you can retain RGB colors in the PDF/X-3 format (as opposed to PDF/X-1a which forces CMYK).

But I can’t seem to make this work in Acrobat. When I try to create the PDF/X-3, Acrobat forces me to choose a PDF/X-3 conversion profile that converts the colors to CMYK-- at least it sure looks that way because the colors in the resulting PDF/X-3 are MUCH DULLER than the colors in the original file.

Any suggestions? How do I create a PDF/X-3 and somehow retain RGB color??

In Acrobat preflight, it’s clearly stated that a PDF/X-3 conversion will convert colors to CMYK:

So yes, the info is conflicting (especially since the PDF/X-3 standard itself does seem to allow RGB).

Try PDF/X-4 (I think it should preserve RGB, not sure).

Also, if you’re on Mac you can save PDF to generic PDF/X-3 from Preview. I doubt it converts colors to CMYK.

Also, I wonder if Amazon KDP doesn’t provide instructions how to save files for them?

    Hello @mrstrongarm

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out.

Please note that Acrobat cannot create a true PDF/X‑3 file that preserves RGB colors end‑to‑end in the way you expect.
What you’re seeing (colors becoming dull / converting to CMYK) is expected, standards‑based behavior when using Acrobat to convert to PDF/X.

Please check these documents for more details: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/color-profiles.html

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

    Hi Anand Sri,

Many thanks for your kind reply. Very disappointing, but it does confirm my own experience, namely: that converting a PDF to a PDF/X-3 will NOT preserve RGB colors, but will, in fact, convert them to CMYK.

Thanks, too, for the links, but that second document contains a statement that's either flat-out wrong, or very misleading. Here’s the statement:

“(PDF/X‑3) Does not convert colors. Use this method when creating a document printed or displayed on various or unknown devices. When you select a PDF/X‑3 standard, color profiles are automatically embedded in the PDF.”

That directly contradicts my experience: embedding profiles DOES cause RGB colors to be converted to CMYK in the resulting PDF/X-3. Maybe the above statement is correct in some technical sense, but it’s very misleading to a layman like myself. FWIW.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers, Mark
