Is livecycle necessary any more?

Previously we had used adobe livecycle in conjunction with Acrobat to design forms.  Is this necessary anymore?  I don't see livecycle referenced on the site so I'm wondering if the newer versions of acrobat have absorbed the functionality of adobe livecycle.  (We're revisiting our forms and updating software.  The forms have not been touched for quite some time)

We need:

  • Electronic signatures
  • XML exports
  • email forwarding
  • The ability to create some logic behind the forms to provide for basic data validation.

Do we still need livecycle?

All of that can be done using Acrobat. However, if you have pre-existing LCD forms you will need to re-create them as Acrobat forms, if you no longer have access to LCD, or you won't be able to edit them in the future.

LCD still exists, but is losing favor rapidly and the files created using it won't work on most systems (basically, anything that's not by Adobe, excluding on mobile devices, where it doesn't work at all). Also, LCD is no longer bundled with Acrobat Pro. You now need to purchase it separately.

The LCD forum is here, by the way: LiveCycle Designer
