Is there a way to disable the floating grey page numbers

Question

Page numbers now show up in grey on the right hand side of the document and do not disappear. They sometimes obscure the content of the file or cover words, which they make difficult to select or highlight. Is there a way of disabling this?

Is that happening when you switch to Reading View?

In any case, would it make any difference if you switch to Adobe Acrobat Classic View instead of the Modern Acrobat View (a.k.a "Acrobat New Experience")?
