Is there a way to reduce Acrobat's memory usage?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Adobe Community and also fairly new to using Adobe Acrobat.

I've noticed that Acrobat sometimes uses a lot of RAM, especially when I have multiple PDF files open. Is this normal, or are there any settings I can change to make it use fewer system resources?

I'd appreciate any tips or best practices. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Could you please share more details about the issue?

    Are you using Acrobat or the freeware Acrobat Reader?

    Are you on a Mac or Windows OS, and what is the version?


    Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: 26.001.21771, Planned update, Aug 01, 2026. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again.

    Prevent Acrobat from reopening many PDFs from the previous session

    If Acrobat is opening several PDFs automatically when it launches, check this preference:

    • Windows: Menu > Preferences > General

    • macOS: Acrobat / Adobe Acrobat Reader > Preferences > General

    Under Basic Tools, look for Open PDFs from last session on Acrobat launch and turn it off if you don’t want Acrobat to reopen the last set of PDFs automatically.


    Check Page Display performance preferences

    Go to:

    • Windows: Menu > Preferences > Page Display

    • macOS: Acrobat / Adobe Acrobat Reader > Preferences > Page Display

    Then review these documented options:

    If your system is slow with image-intensive pages, Adobe says you can deselect Show Large Images.

    On Windows, deselecting Use Smooth Zooming turns off animation effects, which improves performance.



    If the issue is file-specific, optimise the PDF copy if you have Acrobat Pro

    If the high resource usage happens mostly with a particular large or image-heavy PDF, and you have Acrobat Pro, try optimising a copy of the file.

    To review what is taking up space in the PDF:

    • Windows: Menu > Save as Other > Optimised PDF > Audit space usage

    • macOS: File > Save as Other > Optimized PDF > Audit space usage

    To save an optimised copy:

    • Windows: Menu > Save as Other > Optimised PDF

    • macOS: File > Save as Other > Optimized PDF
