Issues adding fields when Preparing a form

When I am preparing a form and add a text field. I can't make it stop.  I need to be able to format what I just added, but there is a new text field on my curser.  I can not turn it off unless I go out of preparing and come back in.  This is with any of the fields that I try to add. 

Please help.
