Need help making a special edition paperback

Hi! I'm trying to convert my pdf which I created in Vellum to have a different color background for the text pages and white font for the lettering. I've been able to change the background, but only on completely blank pages. Even when I change the font color manually and put an image behind it, it doesn't work that way either. I'm about to pull my hair out. HALP PLEASE.

This is really NOT the way to do that. You should make the changes in the original file, and then create a new PDF file from it, not attempt to make such sweeping changes in the PDF itself, which is supposed to be the final format in your workflow.
