Question

No double-sided printing

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to the community to report a persistent issue regarding the print engine in Adobe Acrobat (and Acrobat Reader).

[Problem Description] Adobe Acrobat consistently overrides or ignores the duplex (double-sided) printing configurations set in my printer driver. Even when I manually enable "Two-sided printing" through the 'Properties' button within the Acrobat print dialog, the software seems to bypass these instructions and proceeds with single-sided printing.

[Environment]

  • Printer: Epson L3100 Series (Manual Duplex Model)

  • Software: Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat Reader (Latest version)

  • OS: Windows 10/11

[Key Observations]

  1. This issue is exclusive to Adobe software. I have tested the same printer with at least three other PDF editors and various web browsers (Chrome, Edge), and they all handle the duplex settings perfectly.

  2. The printer driver's manual duplexing UI, which usually appears to guide the user in flipping the paper, fails to trigger only when printing from Acrobat.

  3. Adjusting settings in the 'Printer Properties' or 'Preferences' does not resolve the issue, as Acrobat seems to enforce its own print parameters.

[Request for Assistance] This conflict leads to significant paper waste and disrupts my workflow. Has anyone else encountered this specific behavior with Epson's manual duplex models? If there is a hidden setting within Acrobat to prioritize the native printer driver's control, please let me know.

I would also appreciate it if the Adobe technical team could look into this compatibility flaw between the Acrobat print engine and Epson’s manual duplex protocol.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello,

Thanks for sharing such a detailed report, this is really helpful. I understand how this impacts your workflow, especially with manual duplex printing.

From what you’ve described, Acrobat should normally pass the printer driver settings correctly, including duplex instructions. Since this is working as expected in other applications, it does suggest a possible interaction issue between Acrobat and the Epson driver rather than a confirmed general defect.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm a few details:

    • Exact Acrobat version, go to Help and then About
    • Printer driver version and whether it is the latest from Epson
    • Does the issue occur with all PDFs or only specific files
    • Does it behave the same in both Acrobat and Reader

In the meantime, you can try the following:

    • In the print dialog, click Advanced and toggle “Print as Image” to see if behavior changes
    • Ensure “Let printer determine colors,” and similar overrides are not forcing settings
    • Try reinstalling or updating the Epson printer driver
    • Test with a different printer driver variant if available, for example, PCL vs PS

We’d like to better understand this behavior. Once we have the above details, we can guide you further or escalate if needed.
