Question

No longer can pres Esc key to close comment window after entering markup.

I updated Acrobat Pro DC to version 2022.001.20142 very recently.

I do proofreading that requires constant use of markup tools to insert, delete, and highlight content. My typical workflow with insertions and deletions is to enter Comment mode, select text, and either press Delete to indicate a removal or start typing to add replacement text.

I always have been able to press the Esc key to close the pop-up note after I add my notes and edits. This has been a quick, efficient, fluent workflow.

Now, in this new version, when I press the Esc key, the notes/edits vanish but the pop-up window stays open.

Apparently, I now have to move the cursor and click on the close button. Thus, this process takes more time and increases hand fatigue.

Would someone please explain how this is advantageous?

Mine just started to do this too - is there a fix yet?

Hi everyone,

I don't know if it works on your Acrobat too, but for me the easiest option after editing a comment  is to press CTRL+S, which basically saves the whole document and, by doing so, saves the comment and does close the popup.

The only drawback of this could be the need to save the file multiple times, but I don't think it is that noticeable if your file system is fast enough.  And if you want to undo changes after saving  there is still the good old CTRL+Z.

Hope it helps.

I tried three times to create an account there, but never got past the "confirm your e-mail address" stage. 8-(

I too am a proof reader and I wanted to share that this is so counter-productive and frustrating that adobe should at least show some interest and bring back the option of ESC. What they have done is ludicrous at best and based on no logic context.

Is there any way someone can contact someone directly from Adobe?

I see that we're still stuck with three steps instead of one key. Hey, Adobe, please roll back this change!

Any sign of a rollback of this change? Any news at all?

I figured another better workaround to this problem. A comment box can be closed with the contents saved by a double click anywhere on the borders of the comment area (including author's name, time, or the slim areas on the sides of and beneath the comment. I hope it helps fellow users until this "issue" gets fixed.

That's a helpful insight, @Sharang5C49, but you still have to take your hands off the keyboard, move the cursor over to the comment box (which never is close by), and then click.

With the old paradigm, I didn't even have to lift my hands; just press "Esc" and move on.

Yes, it's definitely not the same as the previous Esc function, but this double-click has considerably decreased my discomfort for now.

Hey, I dont use the esc key in the way OP or other users here do. But I want to put in my two cents for the Adobe Employees who frequent here.

I use the esc key to change from tools back to default cursor (hand for me). My work requires mouse-in-hand all the time, so anytime I can reduce mouse movement/clicking by using the keyboard is great. I used to be able to select a tool, use it, then press esc to default back to the hand cursor. I have just delved deeper and found the keyboard shortcuts for some tools but unfortunately not all - but hey, at least I can get my hand-cursor back with the keyboard now.

I kinda wonder what the heck the escape key is for now? I would posit that my use of it was actually what one would assume it is for (defaulting back to original).... so what the heck?

Why isnt there full customization for keyboard shortcuts? Sounds like that would be a huge winner (I can hear Adobe's software developers and legacy coders grimacing and twisting their faces in horror right now).

Cheers.

And this weekend, faced with a messy PDF-markup task, I went back to the less-than-current version of Acrobat Pro on another system so I did not have to deal with the complex set of workarounds now required to finalize and close comments. So much faster, easier, and more efficient! Please, Adobe, pay attention when users tell you that this change has no fans among your user base.

I reset my Adobe password just to log in so I can reply to this chain in emphatic agreement and frustration.  This is a significant step back in functionality for a widely used program.  I am incredible dissapointed in Adobe for both making this nonsensical change and then failing to fix it despite emphatic and repeated feedback on how this change makes utilizing the software much less efficient.  Very frustrated and dissapointed with this change and that the former functionality has still not been restored.

I agree. This is so frustrating!! When does Adobe change back to this (convinient) functionality of Esc?!
