OCR problem : big lose of quality

Hello,

I have scanned a musical score with Acrobat Pro.

In the Acrobat scan settings, I have noticed that if I choose the OCR settings with "editable text and image" ("texte et image modifiables" in french) (see screenshot), the scanned PDF lose quality (black color becomes "between black and grey", and I have errors in the page).

Now, if I select the OCR with "searchable image" ("image indexable" in french), the problem has gone and the quality is top.

Why ?

PS : I have the same problem when I am in Acrobat "Edit" mode : the "Edit" mode is converting the file to editable text and image, so the result is awful also.

Hi @gary_sc

In this screenshot, I have selected "searchable image" ("image indexable" in french)(see blue arrow). Is it corresponding to "searchable image Exact" (that keep the top quality) ?

Hi, @pierret18811376, since I do not know French at all, the only alternative I have is to compare your screenshot with mine.

First, let me point out my path to this screenshot. (I'm using the new user interface, if you need this with the previous user interface, let me know)

Starting from here, click on the dropdown next to "In this File" and then click on the gear icon in the upper right corner:

 That gets you to here.

Unless you need screenshots from the old (good) User Interface, that's the best I can do for now.

Best and good luck!

Hi, @pierret18811376, here are the various options and a description on how they work:

Searchable Image

Ensures that text is searchable and selectable. This option keeps the original image, deskews it as needed, and places an invisible text layer over it. The selection for Downsample Images in this same dialog box determines whether the image is downsampled and to what extent. Consequently, #1 is typically not acceptable to a FedGov agency (or any entity with an interest in a document of record having the proper "provenance").

Searchable Image (Exact)

Ensures that text is searchable and selectable. This option keeps the original image and places an invisible text layer over it. Recommended for cases requiring maximum fidelity to the original image. Typically this is what a FedGov agency requires if submitting a scanned image of text.

Editable Text & Images (Formally known as Clear Scan)

Synthesizes a new custom font that closely approximates the original and preserves the page background using a low-resolution copy.

The option "searchable image" creates searchable text behind the image.
