Question

Open In Desktop App Opens TMP file

I have a PDF file open in Google Chrome.

I click Open in Desktop App and it opens in Adobe Acrobat.

For some reason, the file name is now AcroBrwEx_(file name)_ADWBBD.tmp.tmp.

Then when I try and email it, it gets blocked because of the file name.  See below.

Any ideas.  This just started a month ago or so.

Thanks!

Hi @rdvos,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear you’re running into this issue.

When using the “Open in desktop app” option, especially from a web or cloud interface, it’s expected that a temporary file may be created during the handoff to the Acrobat desktop. However, the file should retain the proper .pdf extension and name.

If it’s opening as a .tmp file or not behaving as expected, here are a few things to check:

Suggestions:

1. Ensure Acrobat is set as your default PDF handler

  • Go to Preferences > General in Acrobat and confirm it’s set to open PDFs by default on your system.

2. Check for recent updates

  • Make sure both Acrobat and your browser (if you’re accessing from the web) are fully updated.

3. Try saving the file locally first - this should fix the problem

  • If Acrobat opens a .tmp file, try using “Save As” immediately to rename and save it properly.

4. Are you using cloud storage or integrations (e.g., OneDrive, SharePoint)?

  • Some cloud services create temporary files during download. Acrobat may be picking up that temp file instead of the source.

To investigate further, please let us know:

  • Your OS version (Windows/macOS)

  • Your Acrobat version (Help > About Acrobat)

  • Where you’re opening the file from (e.g., Adobe Cloud, OneDrive, SharePoint, Gmail attachment, etc.)

  • Whether this happens for all files or specific ones

We’ll be happy to help get this sorted for you.
