Opening Document created in Livecycle 8.2 in AEM Designer

I have some documents that were created in Livecycle 8.2.  I know need to update the documents in AEM Designer but every time I attempt to open the document in designer it causes designer to crash.  Is there a way to open the document in AEM designer to update or do I need to recreate the document from scratch?
