Question

Optimizing and Compressing

Hello,
Can someone PLEASE help me understand why, MOST of the time, when I save a PDF as optimized or even just reduced size, the file ends up LARGER than the original? I don't get it. Please help! (forgive caps.. I am desperate to understand what I'm doing wrong here! lol)

Thank you!
James T.

Simply stated, whether an optimization or reduce file size operation will actually result in a smaller PDF file size depends on a number of issues including parameters specified for the optimization (“reduce file size” is simply an instance of “optimization” with preset values) but more importantly, the contents of your PDF file.

For example, if you have a PDF file that is entirely text and vector graphics, there is really nothing that these functions can do to reduce the file size. If your PDF file has a large number of raster images, the file size can be reduced only if you are willing to accept lower image quality through use of much lossier compression and/or downsampling the images to a lower resolution.

Sorry, but you simply can't dictate that these functions will arbitrarily reduce PDF file sizes.

Hi,

As stated by @Dov Isaacs this was why I was asking for a PDF to work with, it can be a sample one you have created that shows the problem, it is very difficult to answer the "Why does my file get bigger?" when we don't know what the file is to start with.

Hi,

Could you share a document that shows the problem? a before and after would be useful.

Well they are very sensitive docs, and they're also 28 MB and 35 MB
respectively. So I'm not sure if I can share them or not.
