Optimizing Files

Some big files with scanned pages and layers of text scroll very slowly, since it takes much time to load each page. Therefore, I optimize files with the command File>Save As Other>Optimized PDF. Since there are a lot of files which I optimize, can you explain how to add an entire folder so that the program may automatically optimize all files in that folder with the same optimization settings?

Is there a way to remove everything from pages with the exception of the text layer?

You can optimize a folder of PDFs. If you have saved your Acrobat optimize settings, you can create an Action to apply it to a file or folder. Go to Tools> Action Wizard> New Action> Save & Export> Save> Specify settings> PDF Optimizer> (select your existing settings), Add a name for the Action and a description, then save.

With a file open, go to Tools> Action Wizard> (select your newly created Action)> Add folder. This will optimize all PDFs in the folder you specify.

For the second part of your question, you can edit an existing prefilght profile to delete all PDF layers, except a layer with a specific name, such as "Text"

Go to Tools> Print Production> Preflight> Fixups (the blue wrench icon)> Layers> Rename layers with a specific name (go to the Options button in the upper right corner of the window and select "Create new Preflight Fixup"). Give the Preflight a new name & description and click on the Edit button to the right of the name, Use the settings in the attached screen shot.

    Thank you for explaining how to process multiple files. The function “Downsample image resolution to specified value” in PDF fixups also allows to reduce the size of images.

    When the program was optimizing a big PDF file with thousands of pages, it stored some temporary files in С:\[Users]\[User name]\AppData\Local\Temp. Those files were tens of gigabytes in size. Do you know how to optimize pages directly in the source PDF files without storing any big temporary files?

    No, I do not. You could try an on-line PDF optimizing service, I don't know if there would be any practical benefit.
