Question

Page label modifications are not responding

I have a multi-page pdf and want the page numbering on the thumbnails to correspond with the page numbering on the document. The document was created with InDesign and exported as a pdf. The document has a cover, which I want to “number” as none. Pages 2-4 should be numbered with lowercase Roman numerals, i, ii, iii; and subsequent pages (5-80) should be numbered with numbers, starting with 1. The instructions: All tools > Organize pages > Page labels is not responding or making any changes to the labels on the thumbnails. I have clicked “begin new section” at each of the above sections.

WHAT is the problem?

Is there any indication that the document cannot be modified? This could be because of file system permissions or because the document is a PDF/A document. When you say that page labels “is not responding”, what exactly do you mean? Is this happening with all documents, or just a subset?

What I mean is that the numbering on the thumbnails is simply not changing. I haven’t knowingly indicated that the document should be locked in any way. I’ll make a test project and see if the same thing happens consistently. Thank you for your reply.

I have discovered the problem. Within the preferences menu of the pdf, under Page Display > Page Content and Information, “Use logical page numbers” was unchecked. Once checked, the changes to the page labels that I want could be made.
