Question

pdf/a-4 (pdf 2.0)

Any known timeline when we may be able to save files into the pdf/4-a (2.0) format?  I'm about to work with a large group of scanned family history documents that I aim to organize and apply metadata to as an archive for genealogy work.  Reading about this newer/emerging format, I was interested in utlizing it.

Thanks!
Matt

Is there a particular feature of PDF 2.0 or PDF/A-4 that your workflow requires?  If not, then the use of PDF/A-2 or A-3 (depending on whether you wish to support associated files) would be perfectly fine.

No idea of Adobe's plans, however, since one of the points of all PDF/A versions is that they can be readable forever, you should be fine using any version of PDF/A (they shouldn't ever go out of date). Is there anything particularly interesting in PDF/A-4 or PDF 2.0 for your needs?
