PDF Corrupted

The following sequence of actions happened, and I tried a few quick fixes along the way. I now believe the PDF has reached a corrupted state.

Initially, I filled out the PDF and applied a digital certificate signature before sharing it with the organization so they could complete the remaining sections. They filled their part and returned the document.

Later, I needed to replace my digital certificate signature with a drawn signature. To do that, I used a browser and managed to remove the digital signature and save the document.

After reopening the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, I started noticing issues such as duplicated text appearing in multiple form fields. However, the document still appeared normal in the browser at that time. Since it looked correct there, I proceeded to replace the signature with a drawn signature and submitted the PDF.

Now I need to make another update to the same PDF and resubmit it. After performing the latest edit, the PDF has become visibly corrupted even in the browser, and the organization is now reporting document corruption issues.

At this point, I cannot restart the process from the beginning because it would create a major problem. I need a way to recover or repair the current PDF while preserving the existing filled information and signatures as much as possible.

    Hello @padmanabha

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for the detailed information. We're sorry for the trouble you had.

    Please note that :

    1. Digitally signed PDFs are designed to prevent changes after signing.

    2. Removing or altering a digital signature can invalidate the document structure and form field state, especially if edited outside Acrobat (e.g., in a browser).

    3. This can lead to issues like duplicated form data, inconsistent rendering, or file corruption.

    Suggestions:

Try “Save as Optimized” to rebuild the file:

    1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat (desktop app)

    2. Go to Menu > File > Save as Other > Optimized PDF.

    3. In the dialog, keep the default settings and click Save.

Create a clean copy via “Print to PDF”: This flattens the document and removes problematic form/signature layers.

    1. Open the PDF in Acrobat

    2. Go to Menu > File > Print.

    3. Select printer: Microsoft Print to PDF (Windows) or Adobe PDF (if available)

    4. Click Print and save a new file.

If the form fields are still editable but corrupted, try removing problematic fields:

    1. Open PDF in Acrobat

    2. Go to All Tools > Prepare Form.

    3. Inspect duplicated fields and delete/recreate them.

    4. Save the file

Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: Version: 26.001.21563. Planned update, May 18, 2026. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again.

Let us know how it goes, and share your findings.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

I’ve had this happen after interrupted downloads or when the file was copied from a failing USB drive. Sometimes Acrobat can’t repair it, but opening the PDF in another viewer and re-printing it to a new PDF surprisingly works. Also worth checking the original file size against the source in case the download was incomplete.
