PDF displaying fine in Acrobat but not non-Adobe apps

We recently produced a large document in InDesign (using a Google font). It's displaying fine in Adobe Acrobat, as expected, but we discovered that some non-Adobe PDF readers (e.g. Preview on Mac) will display garbled characters in some parts of the text. Does anyone know how to diagnose and solve this problem? Many thanks in advance!

Acrobat is one of the few software that complies 100% with the specifications of the PDF format.

This is not the case with most other PDF viewers which are unreliable, especially Preview.

- Make sure all your fonts are fully embedded, or convert the text to images.

- Report the issue to the developers of these faulty PDF applications.
