Question

PDF files become corrupted when opened in Adobe Acrobat

We are experiencing an issue where PDF files become corrupted immediately after opening them in Adobe Acrobat.

This started recently and is happening more frequently. The files are not corrupted before opening, but after opening them in Acrobat they can no longer be opened, neither in Acrobat nor in other PDF viewers.

This occurs with different PDF files and from different sources. In some cases the files are opened from a network or cloud location, in other cases locally.

We would like to understand what could cause Acrobat to corrupt PDF files upon opening and how this can be prevented.

Environment:
– Adobe Acrobat version: 25.1.21111.0
– Operating system: Windows 11

Any guidance or known issues would be appreciated.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and thanks for sharing the detailed description and environment info.

Acrobat does not normally modify or rewrite a PDF just by opening it, so when files appear corrupted after being opened, it’s usually due to an external interaction during the open/save process rather than Acrobat intentionally changing the file.

Here are the most common causes and the recommended steps:

1. Security software or file-sync interference
Real-time antivirus, DLP, or ransomware protection tools can lock or alter PDFs when Acrobat accesses them—especially if the files are on a network drive or synced folder (OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.).
• Try temporarily disabling real-time scanning for PDFs
• Add Acrobat to the AV/DLP allowlist
• Test by opening the same file from a purely local folder that is not synced

2. Network or cloud storage latency
If the file is opened from a network/cloud location and the connection drops or delays while Acrobat is reading the file, the PDF header or cross-reference table can become incomplete, making the file unreadable afterward.
• Copy the file locally before opening
• Ensure the file is fully synced/downloaded before opening

3. Background save or auto-recovery conflicts
Features like auto-save, document recovery, or background content analysis can conflict with restricted permissions or external file locks.
• Disable “Protected Mode at startup” (Go to Preferences(Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Security (Enhanced)> Uncheck 'Enable protected mode at startup') for testing.
Note: Please turn on the security after testing to avoid any security risk.

4. Third-party PDF generators
If the PDFs are created by non-Adobe tools, they may contain structural issues that Acrobat is stricter about when opening.
• Try opening the file in Acrobat using File > Open (not double-click)
• Use File > Save As only after confirming the file opens cleanly

Recommended next steps:

Test with antivirus/DLP temporarily disabled

Open a copy of the file from a local, non-synced folder

If the issue persists, collect and share a sample file before and after corruption, and a small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs for further investigation.
