PDF Maker No Longer Creates Word Links

I use Acrobat Pro DC.   I have been creating PDF files from within Word 365 for years.  I write manuals that contain the Word table of contents feature and cross-reference links (e.g., see page 6).  I create different PDF manuals a lot -- about every week.  I have been using the PDF Maker on the Acrobat tab and have the "create links" preference option on and in Acrobat, Edit, Preferences the create links option is also on.   This has worked beautifully -- the table of contents page in each PDF contains links for the page numbers so the reader can jump to a page.  And in the manual the "see page xx" cross-references are also links.

But...as of a couple days ago, these links are no longer being created when I create the PDF from the PDF Maker (and yes, I have checked the preferences still have "create links" checked and Acrobat preferences has this option checked as well).  Only my "www" references in my manuals are being created as links.  The table of contents and cross-references are no longer being created as links.  I have tried updating, uninstalling and re-installing Acrobat.  I have created a new Word document with a table of contents and cross-references and I have even tried a new and existing documents on another computer with Word 2016 and Acrobat Pro DC -- none create the links anymore!  And it's not just the PDF Maker -- creating the PDF using File, Print to Adobe PDF and File, Save as PDF do not work either, but I'm not sure if they ever did (I don't use this method to create PDFs).  The only way I can get the links to be created is to create the PDF from within Acrobat using the Create PDF tool, but there are limited options with that and I would prefer to use the PDF Maker in Word.  I'm wondering if a recent update of Acrobat is the cause?  I'm at a loss at this point.  Even my existing documents that now have working PDFs will not re-create a PDF with these links anymore.  So I know it's not a specific document, since I have tried existing and new ones.  I know it's not Word 365 since I have tried on another computer with Word 2016 and I know it's not a setting or problem on my computer with Windows or Acrobat, etc. since I have tried on another computer (a laptop I rarely use).  Not sure what else to try to fix this...seems the issue might be an Acrobat update?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Correct answer Amal.

Hi Michele

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that.

We have investigated this issue and found that this has broken with a recent Office update and would require a fix from Microsoft.

This has also been raised on Microsoft fourms in several threads and acknowledged and it seems they are investigating this issue.

As a workaround, please revert to older version of Office to make links work. For more information please check the similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/links-from-ms-word-not-working/m-p/12447683#M333460

Thanks Amal, I appreciate your quick response.    I actually saw that about the Microsoft issue when I was trying to solve the problem and that is why I tried it on another computer that uses an older version - Word 2016.   It still did not work in that version either.    But, I just tried it in Word 2013 and that one did work!  So, it's Microsoft...ugh.   Thank you!   I thought I was losing my mind!!!   Anyway, I will use 2013 for now until they fix it.
