PDF text not copying correctly in Adobe Acrobat – formatting gets broken

Hi everyone,

I’m using Adobe Acrobat and trying to copy text from a PDF document, but I’m facing an issue where the formatting gets completely messed up after pasting.

Instead of clean paragraphs, the text comes out with random line breaks and spacing issues, which makes it hard to use for editing or documentation.

I’ve already tried:

  • Using “Copy with formatting”
  • Opening the file in different view modes
  • Restarting Acrobat

But the issue still continues.

Is this a known limitation in Acrobat, or am I missing a setting that controls text extraction properly?

Would appreciate any help or workaround. Thanks!

How well you can copy content from a PDF file depends on how well it was generated - and there are some pretty crappy PDF generators out there. There are a number of things that might improve your experience: You can try to export the PDF file to MS Word and see if this works better for repurposing PDF content. Sometimes when you run the autotag function, this will also improve the behavior when you copy and paste. Just search for “autotag” in the tool search function.

Thanks for the clear explanation 👍
That actually makes sense — the PDF was generated from a third-party tool, so structure might be the issue.

I’ll try exporting it to Word and also check the autotag option in Adobe Acrobat as you suggested.

    Appreciate the help!
