PDF unexpectedly changes to .cp (Captivate) file

A colleague is reporting that an Adobe PDF that has been used for a while unexpectedly has changed to a .cp file. Changing the extension back to .pdf does not solve the problem. The file has never been used in Captivate nor was it created in it.

How can I get this file to be a true PDF again?
