PDFMaker and other Adobe add-ins keep reinstalling in Microsoft 365 apps after removal

I have a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. It automatically installs Adobe PDFMaker Macro, along with other Adobe add-ins, to my Microsoft 365 [Office] applications on my Windows 11 PC and on my MacBook Pro. I don’t want these installed. I know the correct manual routines for exporting PDFs from my Microsoft applications. And your add-ins occasionally fail and cause the Microsoft apps to crash. They also share information about my computing habits with Adobe.

Had extensive conversations with Microsoft about this.  Bottom line: “Take it up with Adobe.”

There seems to be no way on my Office 365 desktop apps  to remove the add-ins. There IS a temporary way to remove them from Office 365 desktop apps on Windows, [Run as Administrator, and in each app choose File>Options>Add-Ins>Manage COM Add-ins]. But after I shut down my PC for the day, next time I open Word, PowerPoint, Excel or Outlook Classic, the add-ins get restored. They take up valuable screen real estate in the Ribbons, in addition to the other objectons.

Is there a way I can get Adobe to stop installing these add-ins on Windows, and to remove them from Office 365 for Mac desktop apps??? Please?

@Electroscribe_2023 we have an update form our development team as below:

On windows, the PDFMaker Office/Outlook add-in is registered by a component separate from the visible "PDFMaker" checkbox in the installer. Unchecking it or removing it manually (even via Office's COM Add-ins manager, run as Administrator), removes the add-in, but our installer still has it recorded as installed. So, the next background repair triggered by app launch or reboot restores the component back.

You can completely disable these by uninstalling and re-installing with below command line options:

    setup.exe /sAll /msi DISABLE_PDFMAKER=YES DISABLE_PDFMAKER_OUTLOOK=YES

After install the addins should not be present in Office apps and should not come back when repairs are triggered.

Windows Command.exe returned the following message: ‘setup.exe’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.  Need more instructions on using command.exe to do this.

    Ignore. Duplicate entry. Sorry.

And, if there are command line instructions for Mac OS Terminal, that would be great as well.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi @Electroscribe_2023 ,

Hope you're doing well, and thank you for such a detailed post. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

Before I walk you through the options, a couple of quick questions to make sure I point you to the right path:

    • When Acrobat reinstalls the add-ins after shutdown, is this happening after a Windows/Office update, after an Acrobat update via Creative Cloud, or just on every fresh boot regardless?

    • On your MacBook Pro, are you running Acrobat from Creative Cloud as well, or is it a standalone install?

    • Are you on Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro?

Please try the steps below and see if that works:

    Windows:

Remove PDFMaker via the Acrobat installer (deepest Windows fix)

A thorough approach is to locate AcroPro.msi (typically in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\Setup Files\{your-version-GUID}\) and run it, choose Modify, then set Create Adobe PDF and Acrobat Distiller > Additional PDFMakers both to "This feature will not be available", then click Install and reboot. Please check the correct answer marked in the similar discussion here  Adobe Support Community

This tells the Acrobat installer itself not to deploy PDFMaker, which is more durable.

For full background on PDFMaker and its relationship with Office, the official Adobe reference is here:
Troubleshoot Acrobat PDFMaker issues in Microsoft Office on Windows — https://adobe.ly/4bfWSdV

    Mac:

There is currently no Microsoft-documented method to manage or permanently block the Adobe PDFMaker macro or add-in on macOS. Acrobat drops the add-in files into ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Startup and replaces them whenever it updates, without prompting. Check the Microsoft help page here: https://adobe.ly/4wtwJ3D

The most practical workaround for Mac users is setting up a macOS Folder Action to monitor that Startup folder when Acrobat silently reinstalls the add-ins, you get a notification, and you can manually delete the files from the three relevant folders. It requires about 15–30 seconds every few weeks when Acrobat updates. Not ideal, but it's the most reliable method available right now on Mac without a supported Adobe toggle. You may also share this as feedback directly with our engineering team here https://adobe.ly/4wG6QO8

On the privacy concern: Your point about data sharing is noted. If you'd like to review exactly what Acrobat collects, Adobe's privacy controls for usage data are documented here: Adobe Privacy Center — manage your data

You can opt out of usage data collection from within Acrobat under Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Trust Manager

    Hope this will help.

Good news, so far. On my WIndows 11 PC, was able to successfully stop PDFMaker and Send PDF as Link add-ins from automatically reinstalling to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Classic [desktop] -- at least on restart.  After following your steps, ran those Microsoft apps as Administrator and removed the add-ins one last time. Then I rebooted the computer. When I opened each Microsoft apps, those add-ins were NOT reinstalled.

    Remove PDF Maker from Acrobat
    Remove PDFMaker from Acrobat Distiller.

Will have to wait until the next Windows Update to make sure this “takes,” but will get back to you.
Those steps you outlined for the Macintosh will take additional time and clarity of mind. Will do those in a couple of days and get back to you. But yes, on Windows, it seems to work!

    Thanks immensely!

FAIL!  Now, Word, Outlook Classic, Excel, and PowerPoint automatically reinstall PDFMaker every time  I launch the programs after exiting, no matter whether I remove PDFMaker or not. Acrobat has gone totally rogue on me!
