Hello @carlo_1975

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out.

You can use Acrobat Pro to add custom page numbering after merging multiple PDF files in Acrobat, but it requires using the Bates Numbering feature. See this article to learn more: Add Bates numbering in Acrobat Pro.

Suggestions:

  • Merge the Files

    • Combine your PDFs into one document using Combine Files in Acrobat.
  • Apply Bates Numbering with Prefixes

    • Go to All Tools > Edit PDF > Bates Numbering > Add.
    • Select the merged file and choose Add Prefix for each range.
    • For example:
      • Pages from File 1 → Prefix: A/
      • Pages from File 2 → Prefix: B/
      • Pages from File 3 → Prefix: C/
    • Set numbering to start at 1 for each range.
  • Result

    • Pages will appear as A/1, A/2, A/3… for the first file, B/1, B/2… for the second, and so on.

Note: Bates numbering works best when you know the page ranges for each original file after they have been merged. Acrobat does not automatically detect original file boundaries, so you’ll need to specify them manually.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.
