Printing out 3 or more copies when i only want one to print

Im having issues when using adobe to print i only want to print one copy of file that is multiple pages but for some reason it will set 3 everytime. What ive noticed is that when using menu>print it gives me 3 copies but if i hit the print icon on the right of the screen it will default it to one copy. To fix this issues when the print menu comes up i would go to printing prefernces and set the "number of copies" option to 1 instead of 3. It would save for that file but if I went another file and went back to printer prefernces would set it back to 3 for a different document. I cant seem to figuer out whats causing it to set back to 3 in adobe when i chose a different file to print out. This does not happen if dont use adobe to print.

Thanks for the clear description—that’s super helpful. From what you’ve observed (File ► Print shows 3 copies, but clicking the printer icon prints 1 copy), this usually points to the default copy count being set outside Acrobat or a per‑PDF “print dialog preset” being honored by Acrobat’s File ► Print dialog.

Below are the quickest checks and fixes, starting with the most likely root cause on Windows. If you’re on macOS, please let me know (see the single follow-up at the end), and I’ll tailor the steps accordingly.

Fix the printer’s system defaults (they override apps)(i am sure you know this all, putting this here anyway)

Many Windows printers have two places for defaults:

  • Printing Preferences (per user)
  • Printing Defaults (system/wide; applied by the driver and can “snap back” when a new document prints)

If Printing Defaults are set to 3 copies, Acrobat’s File ► Print will keep pulling 3 even if you set 1 in Preferences.

How to correct it (Windows):

  1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers (or Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners).
  2. Right‑click your physical printer (not “Adobe PDF”) → Printer properties (sometimes “Properties”).
  3. Go to the Advanced tab → click Printing Defaults…
  4. Set the Number of copies to 1, and then click Apply / OK.
  5. While you’re here, also check Printing Preferences and set the Number of copies to 1 so that user and system defaults match.

 Quick diagnostic flow

  1. New blank PDF (or a simple one‑page PDF) → Use system print dialog → print → copies should be 1.
  2. Same printer, different app (e.g., Notepad/Word) → File ► Print → confirm copies default to 1.
  3. Problem PDF → File ► Properties → Advanced → check Print Dialog Presets.
  4. If the problem persists only in Acrobat’s File ► Print, reset Acrobat preferences (Step 4) and re‑test.

If the issue is reproducible, this may require in-depth troubleshooting; try contacting Adobe Support for further assistance.
