Problem Editing Page From PDFs in Photoshop

For the past year or so I have been editing pages from PDFs in Photoshop. I clock 'Edit PDF' on the main menu in Acrobat and then right click the page in question and select 'Edit Using > Photoshop.'

Until last week, there were no issues, but now I get a dialogue in Photoshop saying "Could not open [document.pdf] because a colour was specified using an unsupported colour space" and the page doesn't open. I also have to close Acrobat down and reopen the same document when I've managed to edit a page as planned.

Both apps are using the same colour space and the error occurs in random pages. I'm using Win 11 and both apps are updated to the current version.

Any clues please?

    Hello!

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out. We're sorry for the trouble you had with the app.

Could you please confirm if you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat installed? Please ensure you have the latest version of Acrobat installed on the machine: Version: 26.001.21431. Planned update, Apr 14, 2026. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again. Do the same with the Photoshop app as well.

Please note that this error typically occurs when the PDF contains colour profiles or colour spaces that Adobe Photoshop cannot interpret (for example, certain ICC profiles, DeviceN, or spot colour spaces). Even if Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop appear to use the same working colour space, PDFs can embed page-level or object-level colour data that Photoshop cannot process when opening directly.

    Suggestions:

Optimize or sanitize the PDF in Acrobat Pro:

    1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro

    2. Go to File › Save As Other › Optimized PDF

    3. Save the optimized copy

    4. Retry Edit PDF › Edit Using › Photoshop

Use the Preflight tool to check the conversion settings and colour profiles:

Open Tools › Print Production › Preflight

Run the analysis for Color profiles and other related parameters, and then run the fix-ups.

Extract and edit the page as an image (workaround)

    1. Right‑click the problematic page thumbnail in Acrobat

    2. Choose Extract Pages

    3. Open the extracted PDF or export it as an image

    4. Edit the image in Photoshop

Please try these steps and let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.
