problem when converting word file to pdf: special characters not recognized

I try to convert yesterday my thesis in PDF with a lot of  special characters in times new roman Š, ṭ and ĝ and to print it. Adobe recognised it but when I print it, a majority of them were erased. Do you know what I can do to avoid the problem in the future ?
