Read Only Error when Bates Stamping

Question

I am attempting to bates stamp a pdf and getting a "read only" error. The pdf is coming as an Outlook attachment. I'm opening it, going to the bates stamping and chosing Add Files/Add Open File. I immediately get an error that says "Please remove problem files from your list." Next to my one open file, I have the message, "Read only files cannot have bates stamp added."

If I save the same pdf and run through the bates stamp options adding it not as an open file, I can bates stamp it, however that is extra steps. It doesn't happen every time so it's not a default issue. I've checked the properties and there's nothing to indicate any of the problem files are read only.

The problem is that the file you open from your mail client is a temporary file. Changes to that file will not be saved back into the attachment, and will be lost once you close the file. This means that you need to use a "Save As" to save the file to a new location. To make this work, you should do a "Save As" before you try to modify the file.
