Question

Recent Adobe Acrobat Pro crashes/freezes infecting multiple programs

ATTN: Adobe users and support staff

I am seeking insight into whether anyone else is having serious stability problems associated with Adobe Acrobat version 26.002.21931 (64-bit). This has now impacted not only a 2023 Surface Pro 9 but also a brand new Lenovo laptop. Adobe appears to be the primary culprit.

Immediately after installing and configuring Acrobat, I experienced repeated application freezes, Windows Explorer becoming unresponsive, black screens, and Windows hanging during restart. Acrobat became unresponsive even when launched without opening a PDF.

I attempted Adobe's built-in repair process, reset Acrobat's user preferences, and switched to the Classic Acrobat interface. None of these measures resolved the problem. I subsequently attempted to uninstall the affected version and install a newer build.

I have also located reports from other users describing similar system-wide freezing and resource-consumption problems with this specific Acrobat build. The similarity raises serious concerns about a potential software defect.

These failures have consumed substantial time, disrupted the setup of a new computer, and interfered with my ability to use it reliably for work. I am particularly concerned that an application should not cause the operating system and other applications to become unresponsive.

Any insight is appreciated.

@Brad33691103aj6k sounds like you have tried a few things such as the repair, reset preferences and disabled the new Acrobat. On your Microsoft Surface, Acrobat can be installed either from the Microsoft Store or directly from Adobe through the Creative Cloud Desktop app or Acrobat installer. Do you recall which installation source you used? A part of me thinks, their might be slightly some minor  differences between the Microsoft Store package and Adobe's direct installer in terms of updates, permissions, and integration with Windows. If it came from the Microsoft Store, it may be worth uninstalling it completely and reinstalling using Adobe's direct installer to see whether the behavior changes.

With regards to your brand new Lenovo, my first thought is your Acrobat might had have corrupted files. I would uninstall Acrobat. Run Adobe Cleaner Tool to cleaning up corrupt files:
https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/diagnostics-repair-tools/run-creative-cloud-cleaner-tool.html. Once that is done, delete the previous download that had Acrobat and empty your trash can or recycle bin.

Then go back to Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app, and download a ‘fresh’ and ‘new’ Acrobat for your computer.

I did that, cleaned up the files, loaded up Creative Cloud… and it just crashed the graphics driver, causing the background to my screen to be black. This is a brand new laptop.
