Red, yellow + green buttons are missing only on pdf files

The red, yellow + green buttons in the upper left of the screen are missing — only on pdf files. All other file types are okay (indd, psd, txt, ai, etc.) Have tried zooming down and reset all of the preferences I can think of. Anyone have a suggestion?
