Reduced Size PDF

When I produce a PDF from InDesign using the Acrobat PDF Presets and selecting (say) High Quality Print and then in Acrobat I subsequently save it as a “Reduced Size PDF”, it reduces the file size considerably. What is lost? I want the PDF for circulation for reading on computers, tablets and smart phones.

Not really. Adobe doesn't really reveal what this entails, exactly. It's basically a linearization process.

When I create a Reduced Size PDF I get a conversion warning: "The PDF document contained image masks that were not down sampled”. What does this mean?

Why are you selecting a printing quality setting if the file is only meant

for display on monitors?

What would you suggest?

I find the quality of photographs  produced by "Smallest file size" isn't good enough, and although it's mainly for screen use, some users might want to print it out, or a selection of pages, on their desk-top printer.

I would say play around with the settings until you find something that works for you.

The "High Quality Print" option is for professional-grade printing. A normal user should not see many differences between printing that kind of file and a normal one.
