Rendering problem with symbols when converting from Word to PDF using Acrobat Pro

I create a lot of documents with text and graphics and occasionally use mathematical symbols such as pi. When I convert these documents to a PDF using Adobe Acrobat Pro all of the text and graphics dissapear from that page from the symbol onwards? The following pages are fine. It only happens when there is a symbol on the page. I have embedded the fonts but still have the problem.

There are 2 points at which you can embed fonts into a PDF:

  1. As you're exporting the PDF from Word (or another word processor), and
  2. In Acrobat DC Pro, you can force-embed them.

 

Which method are you using?

 

The first method is superior: is fairly flawless in embedding the symbols and fonts.

 

But the second method may or may not solve the problem. You have to ensure that, before you run the embed fonts utility, that you actually have all of the fonts the file uses active on your workstation.  This can cause many different problems that aren't easily identified;

  • Conflicts between fonts with the same name but different encoding systems, such as old TrueType versus Unicode/OpenType.
  • Different versions of the font that might not have identical character sets, such as one version is missing mathmetical Pi symbol.

I think I'm using the first method. Here's what I do - on the Acrobat ribbon I go to Preferences - Settings - Advanced settings - Fonts - I then select 'Embed all fonts'.

Are inserted 'Symbols' treated the same as fonts in Word?

How can I ensure that I actually have all fo the fonts the files uses active on my workstation?
