Requesting e-signatures

Hello - when i request e-signatures and then start to scan my document for where I want the signatures, none of the boxes that I require for signing in the document are actually recognised by Adobe and highlighted to allow you to select them and request signatures for them. These are standard contract documents that have spaces available specifically for signing, it's just that Adobe doesnt seem to pick them up or recognise them as such.
