Scan Paper Surveys to Excel

Hello everyone,

I am working for a non-profit as a media manager, and I am interested in understanding my audience. I am needing to have my audience complete a paper survey to encourage mass participation. My understanding of Acrobat is that it could recognize markings from the original form to pull data that could then be sent to an Excel sheet to be analyze. 

Execution was definitely different than in theory. Does anyone know what I am missing or is there no way this can be done other than manual entries of 10k survey responses?
