selection tool not available in a document with restrictions, though "copying is allowed"

Question

A document under whose Properties states that "content copying [is] allowed" actually does not give us any means of selecting text or images: the Hand tool never changes to a Select tool to allow us to do any copying at all; the Select tool is not available anywhere in the menus. The document uses a FileOpenPlugin for its Security Method. Is this normal?

This is a document that I actually bought and downloaded to my PC years ago, yet I have to log into a website everytime I need to reopen it. It's already quite an unfair hassle, and I have complained about it repeatedly to the publisher, to no avail. The publisher suggests renewing it every 4 years by buying its latest update.

What document did you buy, and from where?

If it is a third-party PDF producing software I don't see how can this be linked to Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Are you using Acrobat Reader and trying to edit a PDF?

Please clarify what software are you using to open this PDF with.

In the meanwhile, if the producer of the PDF requires updates to unclock features and functionalities, then follow that vendor's recommendations and support.
