Shadows remain after deleting text

Good morning, at least to fellow North Americans.  I am trying to edit a document created a couple of years ago by a contractor of our non-profit.  When I select and delete one area of text on the cover (see image), the shadow of the former text remains, and I cannot select it to edit or delete.  Can anyone advise how to address this?  Thanks,
