Shape Fill locked

I am using Acrobat Pro 2017. Trying to add a simple shape from the comment menu - Drawing tab - Rectangle. I can draw the shape (default red border no fill color) but I can not edit the preference to add fill color. I open the properties and select appearance, but the fill color box shows white with a red diagonal line through it. I click on that box and select a color, but after closing the color selection box it still shows the diagonal line. In older versions there was a check box on the appearance properties that you would have to uncheck translucent before you could add fill color, but that box is not there in this version. Anybody else come across this issue? I can't imagine they removed the ability to add fill color to shapes, why would they still have the fill color box if so?

I have compared to another mac machine running the same exact software which does have the fill color available. When I click on the shape properties - appearance - fill color there is not a check box to uncheck transparent on my machine, there is a transparent check box on the other machine. I have compared all of the settings on this machine with the other machine (the one on which the transparent check box is visible) and there do not appear to be any differences between the settings. Any other ideas?
