Slashes created when saving a document - cannot be removed

I loaded a PDF document and then saved it without making any changes.  Adobe Acrobat Pro DC adds slashes "/"  after every line of text.  Here is a portion of my document before/after:

The slashes cannot be deleted.  How can I prevent these slashes from forming?

By the way, the PDF I received and edited was a PDF formed from a Word document.
