Question

Some PDF files will not open in Acrobat

In the last most a proportion ( maybe 20%) of new and old PDF files will not open.

I am getting the same prompt each time

Adobe Acrobat could not open '....' becuase it is either not a supported file type or the file has been damaged'

I have tried the standard troubleshooting, including a 'repair program' , and a virus scan.

Its odd becuase I have opened some of these PDF on numerous previous occasions

Any ideas?

Hi @default8pf5a6igobqg

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the delay.

Could you please confirm the exact version of the Acrobat? Open Acrobat>help>about Acrobat

Acrobat products have historically opened a PDF as long as the %PDF-header started anywhere within the first 1024 bytes of the file. No checks were performed on the extraneous bytes before the %PDF-header. However, the 10.1.5 and 11.0.01 updates improve security by enforcing stricter parsing of the PDF-header. The product now refuses to open the small fraction of PDFs that do not correctly start with the '%PDF-' header and an error appears.

Please try the troubleshooting steps suggested in this help article https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-error-1015-11001-update.html

Thanks,

Akanchha

Make sure that their file names end with the suffix .pdf
