Tabular Lining figure style—Character encoding fail

Can't seem to find any documentation (or resolution) as to why a placed AI file into INDD with tabular lining styles would result in a failed Character Encoding in the PDF Accessibility Checker. If text is created within INDD and exported to PDF it passes.
