text comment font is not embedded

Dear Acrobat enthusiasts, here is the scenario that describes my situation. Any constructive comments?

1. Using Acrobat I add text comments to a PDF file. These are in the default Helvetica font, but Helvetica is not yet used in the PDF file. As a matter of fact in my case the PDF file uses no fonts at all as it is a scan (of sheet music, in case you are curious 🙂

2. I save the commented PDF file, and open it using Preview on my Mac.

3. The text comments show up in ugly courier font. However when I open it using Adobe Reader, they show up in Helvetica. The reason appears to be that the font from the comments is not automatically embedded when I save the file after adding the comments. How to solve this?

Best regards -Jan

Correct answer Karl Heinz Kremer

The font used for comments and form fields is actaully embedded as long as it's not one of the base fonts that Acrobat uses. Helvetica is one of these, and it does not need to be embedded because every PDF viewer/processor shoud know about these.

The gist is: Don't use Preview on a Mac. It's a horrible application when it comes to PDF, and is known to actually destroy your PDF files.

Karl is too modest, he has already written about Apple Preview:

But even Preview on a Mac supports copying ligartues (in Unicode).

That may be, but is completely unrelated to this question.
