Question

Text Recognition and German Umlauts

When I use text recognition on a scanned German document (and select German as the language), none of the umlauts are recognized. They all get turned into other characters (ö becomes o or d, ü becomes 0, ä becomes a or d, etc.).  It takes hours to go through the resulting documents to find and fix this.  How can I get Adobe to recognize umlauts?

Hi,

Thank you for reporting the issue. Can you please provide us the details of the following:

  1. Acrobat Version - Are you on reader or DC? Please share the screenshot of the Acrobat version screen
    1. Go to help -> About Acrobat ... and take a screenshot
  2. Operating system (Mac/Win)
  3. Input PDF Files

I too have exactly the same problem . I can visually read the umlauts etc in the (latest) Acrobat DC converted pdf but when I cut and paste text to elsewhere (ie to google translate or microsoft word) the paste of the umlauts, ss, etc does not paste correctly, and when I try to paste back into the Acrobat DC pdf document letter "l" it does not recognize it (although it does recognize capital "L")....and similar problems. VERY time consuming and annoying to re-edit and recheck everything. I am on the free trial of the latest Acrobat DC, and I am using Windows 7, and I have the latest Microsoft office word.
