Text Toolbar Greyed Out in Acrobat Pro 9.5.5 Mac

PDF text toolbar in Acrobat Pro 9.5.5 for Mac is greyed out. I am not able to change font color, size, etc. Properties toolbox is greyed out and says "no options available."

I have tried:

1. Updating Acrobat

2. Closing and re-opening app

3. Shutting down and restarting Mac

4. Opening and working on only 1 doc at a time

5. Resetting toolbars

6. Making sure doc is not read-only

7. Searched countless forums/tutorials and have tried all recommendations with no success

The ordinary text select tool does not allow editing. You must use an editing tool. Can't remember what that would be in Acrobat 9 though, sorry.

I don‘t see where you have selected text with a suitable editing tool.

Regardless of whether I select text or not, the toolbar does not engage. It doesn't work regardless of what I do.
