Question

Totally flabbergasted!! PDF preview different than in Acrobat and print.

Hi all,

Attached is a PDF. When this PDF is previewed for example in Apple Preview or in an browser it shows 'Verkade' at the bottom. When openend in Acrobat is shows De Vries. This Ad was sent for publishing and although the name of the PDF and preview were 'Verkade', it printed with 'De Vries' inprint. So client was not amused and wants a refund.

Does anyone know what's going on? Or does anyone experienced this also with PDF's?

Thanx!

Best regards, Danny Goyen

The explanation as to why this is happening is a bit technical, but to summarize this file contains the original artwork that was created in InDesign in something called a "PieceInfo" object. This is useful if changes need to be applied later on, as it's basically the original InDesign file. Someone edited the file later on and changed the text in it, most likely in Acrobat, without updating this object, and that's what is causing the issue.

Hmmm, not sure if this is correct. No text has been changed lateron. The 'text' that is changed isn't text. But its part of a imported PDF. Never experienced this before and it's very disturbing so to speak.

It doesn't have to be text, it can be an image. At any rate, this object exists in this file.

I agree it's confusing, but it's a feature of PDF files, even if some viewers ignore it.

HI,

it is a weird one.

First, I would avoid using Type1 fonts. The text using Gotham Rounded (embedded subset) is not outlined either.

I opened the file in Win10 Acrobat DC and illustrator, they both show De Vries. But as you described, in a browser it shows Verkade.

Second, Can you confirm if De Vries text is from a previous version and your document is last updated in InDesign befopre export (instead of text changed in Acrobat).

Thanks for your reply Eric.

Nothing in the file has been edited in Acrobat. Just made in Indesign and exported als a print-ready PDF.

These black areas with 'Verkade' or 'De Vries' are placeholders in Indesign where the unique inprints are imported (also PDF). If you open this pad in for example Illustrator, you will only see 'De Vries'. This is weird as he*ll...
