When printing to pdf, I checked the box "background images" to allow the images to show on the pdf, but now the pdf pages are all are covered by a translucent grey veil.

Go to Edit (or the Acrobat menu if you're on a Mac) - Preferences - Page Display and tick off "Show transparency grid".

I am printing a web page to pdf using the Chrome browser.  The only "edit" I see is in the documents themselves.  Do you mean to open every one of the pdf's and edit as you say?  I did that with one.  I put a check mark in the "Show transparency grid" box and saved that selection.  That did not correct the document.  Is there a way to have this grey veil not happen at the pdf creation stage?

Are you opening the files using Adobe Acrobat or Reader?
